The man who changed the world. In memory of Dennis Ritchie, the legend of his generation

Dennis Ritchie Dennis Ritchie [Dennis Ritchie] left Bell Labs and lived a quiet life in his later years. When his good friend Robert Piket visited him at home, he learned that his old friend had passed away not long ago because of prostate cancer. The world has lost a computer thinker and scientist.

Dennis Ritchie The greatest achievement of Dennis Ritchie’s life was his work with Ken Thompson on the foundations of the B language. Thompson invented the C language based on the B language; and rewrote the Unix system, which laid a good foundation for the subsequent flourishing of Unix. He won the Turing Award in 1983, the Hamming Award in 1990, and the U.S. National Technology Award in 1999, of which the Turing Award is the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in the computer world.

It can be said that our current world would not be so colorful without the C language.

Linux, BSD, MacOS, iOS, the Windows kernel, computer networks, servers, browsers, games, communications, and even the entire Internet ecosystem are all based on C or C-derived languages like C++ and JAVA.

In the latter years, Steve Jobs stood on the shoulders of giants. Steve Jobs stood on the shoulders of giants and led the Apple empire to create one legend after another…

He believed in the principle of “keeping things simple” throughout his life, and designed C and Unix based on this philosophy; never left the company until Bell Labs was acquired in 2006; never married, and lived a reclusive life after retiring in his later years…

In memory of this understated and somewhat sad man who changed the world…

On October 12, 2011, Dennis Ritchie Ritchie died at the age of 70.
